Outline of film capacitors
Plastic film capacitors were developed to take plase of paper capacitors, and their characteristics have improved in miniature size with superior moisture resistance. Dielectric is made of plastic film (polyethylene terephthalate, PET), polypropylene(PP), and polyphenylene sulfide(PPS). Major characteristics are as follows:
  • Film capacitors miniature in size with superior moisture resistance. The simple construction of film capacitors can contribute reduction of the production costs.
  • Film capacitors have superior stability with respect to capacitance change at wide temperature and frequency ranges. The stability of capacitance change shall leads to high performances of customers' products. Capacitance change against temperature in ceramic and electrolytic capacitors is larger than film capacitors'. Especially,capacitance of ceramic capacitors will be changed more than several tens % depending on voltage and temperature.
  • Plentiful materials such as polyethylene terephthalate(PET), polypropylene(PP), and polyphenylene sulfide(PPS) can provide more suitable products that meet the needs of the customer. These materials have better temperature characteristics, low dissipation factor at high frequency, and low dielectric absorption.
  • Film capacitors,essentially non polar, exhibit no problems with reverse voltage. They can accept high voltage (1000VDC) to low voltage (few mV) and AC voltage is also acceptable. The same characteristics are not exhibited in electrolytic capacitors. (AC voltage is also acceptable)
